Boron, Mees Split Pro finals in Skowhegan for Rock Maple Racing
SKOWHEGAN, Maine (Mar. 3, 2008) - Defending champion Jason Boron and rookie
sensation Darrin Mees came out on top in the most unpredictable Pro finals
of the season Sunday, as Rock Maple Racing (RMR) completed Round 6 on the
nine-race 2007-08 Central series snocross schedule at the Skowhegan State
Fairgrounds.
Boron (Outdoor Performance/D&Z Racing Ski-doo), of Leverett, Mass., grabbed
the holeshot and checked out on the field to win Pro Stock, while Mees
(XP-S/Harrison Motorsports Ski-doo), of Setauket, N.Y., found himself
leading Pro Open with just two laps to go when Boron's machine suffered
engine trouble.
Both of Sunday's Pro battles had their bizarre moments. Mees was working his
way through the Stock final when his sled caught fire at the exit of Turn 1.
When safety personnel reached the scene, the WSI No. 170 Ski-doo was a ball
of fire. Meanwhile, Poirier had come off his Cycle Worx Polaris, yet managed
to fight and claw his way back to a fifth place finish.
In Pro Open, Mees had caught Boron when the engine suddenly expired in his
machine. C.W. Sirjane made it another 1-2 finish for Harrison Motorsports,
while Jason Rudd put in a great performance to claim third. Sirjane also
claimed the runner-up spot in Pro Stock, while Alex Moreau (Cycle Worx
Polaris) had his best finish of the season in third.
Defending champion Joe Lemieux held off a hard-charging Patrick Vigneault to
claim the Pro Vet final, while local favorite Dean Stevens (SnoPro Trailers
Ski-doo) of Oakland, Maine, settled for third. Former champion Michelle
Lemieux earned a victory in the Pro Women's final, out-gunning New York
native Khalshia White for top honors.
In Semi-Pro action, Robert Graeber, Jason Stone and Matt Hermann all
recorded final round wins. Graeber, (Woody's/Team Southside Polaris) of
Willow, Alaska, led teammate Derek Graham and Stone across the line in the
Open class; Stone led Graeber and Nick Kelley (Team Arctic/Wallingford
Racing) under the checkers in Stock 600; while Hermann out-gunned Seth
Taylor (on Cody Wallingford's Ski-doo) and Michael George to claim Stock
440.
Lucas Brunelle (Damexco Ski-doo) continued his 2008 hot streak in Sport
division action at Skowhegan. The talented 15 year-old from Quebec
out-dueled Cody Flach and Trevor Walda to win Sunday's Super Stock final,
then capped a great day with a victory over Kyle Conover and Walda in Sport
Stock 600. Jean Sebastian Cote won Saturday's Super Stock final, with Corin
"Hot Rod" Todd second and Conover third. Nathan Leclaire (600 Performance),
Scott Smith (Stock 600 Fan), and Hermann (Stock 500) complete our list of
Sport division winners at Skowhegan.
In Junior division action, Lincoln Lemieux was the rider to beat. The young
athlete from St. Johnsbury, VT, added three more wins to his already
impressive season. Joey Stock and Jake Scott recorded single wins Sunday, as
did Matt Cameron and David Perry. A.J. Perer (Saturday) and Montana Jess
(Sunday) split the weekend's 8-10 300 Freestyle classes in another excellent
round of competition for the Junior riders.
Other winners over the weekend in Skowhegan include Dirk McCrum (Non
Traction); Rene Desrochers (Plus 35 Masters); Scott Edwards (Plus 25 Stock);
KC Anderson (Women Stock 500); Jordan Harrison (Jr. Girls 10-13 Stock 600
Fan); Paige Calderwood (Women Stock 600 Sat.); Janell Smith (Women Stock
Novice); Chelsea Smith (Women Stock 600 Sun.); David Perry (Trail 600
Saturday); and Brandon Bell (Trail 600 Sunday).
Rock Maple's East series teams were also in action over the weekend at
Skowhegan. In fact, they ran two separate, one-day events. Saturday's
final-round winners include Corin Todd (Semi-Pro Open); Joe Pelletier (Sport
600); KC Anderson (Women 600); Joey Stock (Jr. 16-17 Stock 500); Lincoln
Lemieux (Jr. 14-15 Stock 500); Leo Patenude (Jr. 10-13 Stock 600 Fan); and
Connor Roscoe (Jr. 10-13 Stock 380 Fan).
Sunday's East series winners include Todd (Semi-Pro Open); Brent Williams
(Sport 600); Anderson (Women 600); Lemieux (Jr. 16-17 Stock 500); Chris
Ingles (Jr. 14-15 Stock 500); Jake Scott (Jr. 10-13 Stock 600 Fan); and
Roscoe (Jr. 10-13 Stock 380 Fan).
Rock Maple Racing would like to thank Walter Hight and friends for hosting
another successful round of snocross in snowy Skowhegan. Despite Saturday's
storm, we were able to run over 100 qualifying heats. Bright sunshine helped
offset the persistent winds on Sunday, making for a great day of final round
action.
Next on the slate for Rock Maple is our annual visit to Old Forge, NY, this
weekend, March 8-9, for a West series points event. Central and East teams
will take to the track again on March 15-16, at the Orleans County
Fairgrounds in Barton, Vermont.
Rock Maple Racing is the eastern affiliate of the World Powersports
Association (WPSA) , the national sanctioning body for snocross. For
