Craig Goess leaves CWS for ARCA in 2009
DENVER NC (12-1-08) - Greenville, North Carolina's Craig Goess has renewed
his contract to drive for Eddie Sharp Racing in 2009. Goess will pilot the
No. 81 Greenville Toyota Camry in the ARCA RE/MAX Series with 2008 Cometic
Crew Chief Patrick Donahue calling the shots from the pit box. The men
behind the car are the same that took Michael McDowell (2007) and Scott
Speed (2008) to Victory Lane a total of eight times, and netted 12 SIM
Factory Pole Positions. Goess competed in the NASCAR Camping World Series
East Division in 2008 for ESR.
"I'm really excited to get back in the car this month at the Daytona
test," said Goess. "I've been going stir crazy at home with nothing to
race. These regular Camrys on the lot aren't as fun to drive as the ones
at the race shop. I'm looking forward to moving up to the ARCA RE/MAX
Series, and am very thankful to be doing it with Eddie Sharp Racing. ESR
seems to be the best organization in the ARCA Series and I know that with
Patrick Donahue and the rest of the crew that we have in place, everything
will be ready to roll each week when we unload at the track."
Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, Goess was a familiar site in Victory Lane
with his No. 81 Legends car. With more than 200 feature wins at over 24
tracks across the country in the Semi-Pro and Pro divisions, some of the
best drivers in the country feared the No. 81 when it appeared on the
entry list. Goess' success over the years earned him three National Pro
Division Championships, beating some of today's top NASCAR stars such as
Reed Sorenson, Kyle Busch and David Ragan. After winning 40 of the 48
races he entered from 2005 to 2007, Goess started looking towards the next
level.
In 2008, Goess made the move to full-sized race cars running the No. 2
Greenville Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Camping World Series East for Eddie
Sharp Racing. In 12 starts, Goess snagged three top-10 starts, two top-10
finishes and one top-5. Despite turning the wheel over to an ESR teammate
and not receiving driver points for the Lime Rock road course event, Goess
still finished 16th in the point standings of the highly competitive
NASCAR series.
"Craig has a lot of talent and is eager to learn and take his driving to
the next level," commented Crew Chief Patrick Donahue. "He communicates
well and is very professional. He'll fit right in with the guys."
Eddie Sharp Racing is located in the Charlotte, NC suburb of Denver. Eddie
Sharp Racing has proven to be a successful avenue of driver development,
and is considered among the most elite teams in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
Drivers from Eddie Sharp Racing's ARCA program have quickly advanced to
the NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series, two of the highest rated
motorsport series in the world.
In 2007 and in the team's two racecars (2, 22), the ESR trio of Michael
McDowell, Josh Wise, and Ken Butler III scored five wins, ten pole
positions, and an incredible 24 top-ten finishes. In this single season,
Eddie Sharp Racing's drivers won 22% of the season's races, sitting on the
pole for an impressive 43% of the season. ESR followed up in 2008 with
another ground-breaking year. Fielding three full-time entries, Scott
Speed, Justin Lofton, and Ken Butler, III brought home a total of five
wins, seven pole positions, 29 top-10, and 14 top-5 finishes. The ESR
organization took home one-third of the 2008 SIM Factory Pole awards.
"We're looking forward to having Craig back for another season at ESR,"
said team owner Eddie Sharp. "Craig is a great representation of ESR. He
is hard-working, polite, and eager to learn, perform, and succeed."
