Igo finally gets first
mini-cup race in, finishes 4th after three weeks of rain
(Seekonk, Mass.) - Chris Igo Jr. had to wait through three weeks of rain
before getting to run his first mini-cup race of the season Friday night in
the Seekonk Youth Racing Association (SYRA) event at Massachusetts' Seekonk
Speedway. The wait proved worthwhile; Igo drove to a hard-fought
fourth-place finish in the SYRA 750 mini-cup 25-lap feature, running second
for a time before getting hung in the outside groove about midway through
the race. Igo dropped to fifth, and regained a position late in the race to
come home a solid fourth in the SYRA's season opener.
"It was a much-anticipated race to run because of all the rain-outs we've
had up here," Chris began, speaking of the New England region in which he
resides. "It was great to get on the track and do some racing, that's for
sure. We came out strong and led most of the heat race and ended up getting
passed on the last lap to finish second. We started fifth in the feature and
quickly got up to second before I got freight-trained there. I got back to
fourth, and overall we were happy to leave the first race with a top five."
The Igo Racing team actually missed five races between the SYRA and the New
Hampshire Mini-Cup Association (NHMCA) due to adverse New England weather
before getting Friday night's race in. The team's unofficial opening weekend
to the '09 season proved to be a busy one as Chris and the crew displayed
their No. 8 mini-cup at Personal Best Karate in Easton, Mass.
"It's always great when we can bring the car to our sponsors' place of
business and talk to fans and people who may not know much about the sport
but are interested. Personal Best Karate in my hometown of Easton is a new
sponsor of ours. They had students who were graduating to a higher belt
class so it was a lot of fun to talk with them," Chris said.
Igo will be back at Seekonk this Friday for the second SYRA race of the
season at the historic one-third-mile paved oval. He's hoping to start the
season strong after a decent 2008 season that saw him accomplish five
top-three finishes. Fans can keep track of Chris' 2009 season by visiting
