Lonnie Sommerville Wins Atlantic CAT 250

(Halifax, NS, August 8, 2009) Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, NB in his AE McKay Builders Chevrolet Impala SS won the Atlantic CAT 250 at Scotia Speedworld, located near Halifax, NS, on Saturday evening. The race ended on lap 249 when a caution came out and the checkers were thrown! Dave O’Blenis of Boundary Creek, NB and John Flemming of Halifax, NS followed him across the line. Wayne Smith of Timberlea, NS and Kent Vincent of Crapaud, PE rounded out the top five.

John Flemming won the Coast Tire Most Laps Led Award after leading 86 laps of the race. There were 11 lead changes throughout the race between four different drivers. Only 8 cautions – including a competition yellow for gas, tires, and adjustments – interrupted the race which took just under two hours to complete.

Qualifying for the event took place on Friday night; Wayne Smith, Craig Slaunwhite of Terence Bay, and Mike MacKenzie of Halifax, NS each won a LiteCo heat race. There was no B Feature run and all twenty five cars that attempted to qualify started the prestigious event. Shawn Turple of Enfield, NS won the Dartmouth Dodge Dash for Cash, featuring the top ten finishers in the Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials which put him on the pole for the start of the 250 lap Main Feature. Sommerville had the fastest time, with a time of 14.516 seconds (74.401 mph)

Over 5000 fans were also treated to an exciting C&R Auto Supply Sportsman Division 100 lap race. Darren Wallage of Enfield, NS was the eventual winner and raced his way from a 15th starting position and avoided a red flag stoppage on lap 96 that demolished an eight foot section of the front pit wall! Troy Slaunwhite of Terence Bay, NS and Sheldon Pemberton of Dartmouth, NS were second and third respectively.

The CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour returns to action next Saturday, August 15th back at Scotia Speedworld for the Lucas Oil 100. This race is to replace the cancelled event in Shediac, NB. Atlantic Tiltload Time Trials will take place at 5:10pm followed by the Dartmouth Dodge Dash for Cash at 6pm.
