Donahue Wins ACT Race at WMMP, Maine Drivers Dominate Top 13 Positions

ThNorth Woodstock, NH – Graniteville, VT’s John Donahue took his fourth career ACT Late Model Tour win at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, NH on Saturday, June 18. Donahue, in his Ford, came from the sixth starting position for his second career win at the ¼ mile speedway.

Donahue held off ACT Tour Champion Brian Hoar and White Mountain Motorsports Park Champion Quinny Welch on several restarts, before outrunning a hard charging Randy Potter who came from 21st. Welch led the early stages of the event before Donahue took over just before the halfway mark. The battle of the night belonged to Potter, Hoar and Wayne Helliwell for second. Potter would win the battle and was running down Donahue when the checkers flew.

Potter would take second followed by Helliwell then Hoar in fourth.

“In the big picture it was good, but it's a little disappointing,” Hoar said after the race. “I really felt like we had a car capable of winning and I didn't let (crew chief Rick Paya) do what he wanted to do. So I kind of take it on these not-very-wide shoulders. We had arguably the fastest four or five cars starting in the Top-5 – so the pace got set really fast, really early, way faster then I would have liked. But (race winner John Donahue) had a stout car.”

Jamie Fisher of Shelburne, VT rounded out the top five.

Maine racers dominated the 6-13th positions. Second year driver Austin Theriault of Ft. Kent, Maine finished 6th, but felt he could have finished better. “We had a really strong car,” he said. “I'll go out on a limb and say that we probably had a fourth-place car. I know we were chasing down those guys at the end. We just ran out of time.”

Glen Luce of Turner, Maine finished 7th, earning his second top ten finish of the year. He will be looking to score his third as the tour returns to his home track at OPS this weekend. Eric Chase of Vermont followed Luce to the finish line in 8th place.

ACT Rookie Ben Ashline of Pittston, Maine, continued his strong rookie campaign with his third top ten finish of he year as he took the checkers in 9th place, padding his rookie of the year point lead.

Dennis Spencer of Oxford, Maine notched his first top ten finish of the young season when he wheeled his Coleman Concrete sponsored car to a tenth place finish. Luke Hinkley of NH finished eleventh.

Brad Babb of Windham, Maine finished 12th followed by fellow Maine racer Ricky Rolfe of Albany Township, Maine, giving Maine racers credit for six of the top thirteen finishing spots.

Title contenders Brent Dragon and Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. were both involved in accidents and had to settle for finishes well outside the top ten.

Joey started 11th on the 31-car grid and was moving through the field when he was then forced into the wall in what Joey described as “The hardest hit, I’ve even taken here.”

Polewarczyk pitted for repairs and that cost the team valuable time, when he returned he was down twenty-six laps. Upon returning, he was once again one of the fastest cars on the track.

After the race Joey went on to say; “This is very disappointing for our team, we had the car to beat tonight. I knew we would contended for the win, I guess it’s on to Oxford , next Weekend.”

Dragon finished 28th and after the race he said, “It was a rough night. We had a pretty decent car. We just got to the rear after pitting and got involved in an accident and tore the nose up a little bit. It just went downhill from there. There were a bunch of cars spinning in (Turns) 3 and 4, and I had it missed. I went to the bottom and through the grass. As soon as I hit the grass it was like glare ice, and it just took off. I had no control of the car, and I drove right into the side of Jean-Paul Cyr. It bent the front bumper in, and it went downhill from there.”

Donahue had already earned an invitation to the ACT Invitational at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH on Saturday, September 24. The invite list includes Brian Hoar, Nick Sweet, Patrick Laperle, Donahue, Jeff White, Daniel Descoste and Patrick Hamel.

The ACT Late Model Tour will be back in action next Saturday, June 25 with their second trip to Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, ME for a 150 lap event. It will be the last tune-up for many of the ACT teams who will return for the Oxford 250 on Sunday, July 24.
